Why is the movie Kantara so famous?
Kantara is a perfect mix of hidden details, references, & amalgamation of ancient Indian tribal culture.
To get a hold of what the movie was about & why was it so famous & successful, we need to understand about the two deities shown in the film - Panjurli Deva & Guliga Deva.
Panjurli Deva
The meaning of Panjurli in Tulu literature is Wild Boar, i.e. the god of the Varaha avatar. Panjurli Deva is the aatma (soul) of Varaha avatar.
The story of Panjurli Deva starts when Goddess Parvati notices a baby wild boar whose mother had passed away. Hence, she brings the wild boar with her & takes care of him. But, as he grew, he also started to grow long sharp teeth (like a wild boar) and his complete body was associated with itchiness & irritation. As a result of this, he went on destroying the farm lands to get rid of the itchiness & irritation. One day watching all this, Lord Shiva got infuriated & was about to kill Panjurli when Goddess Parvati stopped him. Lord Shiva although calmed for the moment but, for the well being of the people of Earth & to guide them from the path of evil & darkness to good & light, he sent Panjurli to Earth.
In the movie Panjurli Deva is the one for whom the king was searching for so long & when finally he met the deva, he exchanged it with the villagers of the forest by giving them a huge piece of land in the forest for his mental peace.
Guliga Deva
Guliga Deva’s story started when Goddess Parvati brought bhasma (ash or calx) for Lord Shiva. Lord Shiva found a piece of stone in the bhasma which he threw & got landed in vaikunth (heavenly realm). From this stone was born Guliga Deva who was kept to serve Lord Vishnu. But during his service to Lord Vishnu he started getting involved in other peculiar & destructive activities. Lord Vishnu got irritated by this behavior & cursed him to be born from nelaulla-sanke. When nelaulla-sanke was 9 months pregnant, Guliga Deva came out of her by ripping off her stomach. As soon as he was born, he had uncontrollable hunger & started consuming all the food & water of the place. Finally when Lord Vishnu offered his little finger to Guliga Deva, his hunger got satiated & was sent to Earth.
The reference of a hungry Guliga Deva has also been shown in the film when Guliga Deva enters the body of Shiva (the main protagonist).
The war between Panjurli Deva & Guliga Deva
One day while Guliga Deva was roaming around on Earth, he came across Panjurli Deva. Both equally mischievous, got into a long drawn fight. Goddess Parvati had to personally stop this fight between them & instructed them to live together in peace with Panjurli Deva as the shasak (ruler) of the area & Guliga Deva as the kshetrapala (boundary guard). From that day onwards it is believed that they have been living together harmoniously & have been protecting the people of its area.
Even today, to keep peace & maintain balance in the lives of the people, these two deities are worshiped every year. The process of performing the rituals of the worship is called Bhuthakola (in Tulu Bhutha means soul & kola means performance) which has also been shown in the movie,
Lord Shiva’s Reference in the Movie
Main protagonist is named Shiva.
Shiva wears a Rudraksha on his neck
The small tree house of Shiva is named Kailash
Shiva cannot identify a malicious intended man easily
Shiva’s behavior is also very destructive & angry in nature
Lord Vishnu’s Reference in the Movie Kantara A Legend Chapter -1First Look Teaser
The forest officer is named Muralidhar (another name of Vishnu’s avatar Krishna)
Muralidhar is the protector of the forest
Muralidhar in the whole movie sometimes seems to be a bad man. This is a characteristic of Lord Krishna who continues to do what is necessary irrespective of what others think of him
It was because of Muralidhar that the stone which was used to worship Panjurli Deva (the stone which attracted the king in the first scene of the movie) came out of the soil where Shiva’s head got hammered during the climax of the movie & Guliga Deva could rescue the village. Hence, Shiva was being guided by Muralidhar from the beginning.
Another striking connection is of Shiva & Muralidhar with Guliga Deva & Panjurli Deva. In the movie, Shiva & Muralidhar came across each other, then fought with each other, & finally settled peacefully to protect the villagers of the area. This is exactly how the interaction happened between Guliga Deva & Panjurli Deva. Hence, Muralidhar as the representation of Panjurli Deva becomes the shasak of the area & Shiva as the representation of Guliga Deva becomes the kshetrapala of the area.
Death of Devendra Suttooru
The death of Devendra was executed by Guliga Deva in Shiva’s body with the same sword that his ancestor king submitted before the rock used to worship Panjurli Deva. This is because the king promised the villagers the land in exchange of Panjurli Deva by submitting his sword before Panjurli Deva. But the king’s descendant Devendra broke that promise to get hold of the land donated to the villagers.
Also, Devendra’s father too wanted the land back, but he did not plot any nasty plans as Devendra & asked for it directly from Panjurli Deva. But Devendra in order to take the land back brought havoc & massacre on the villagers & hence his death was executed with his ancestor’s sword.
Guruva’s Dream
In the movie there was a scene where Guruva (the Bhuthakola performer) had a dream & wakes up in midnight to call Devendra to tell him that situations have reached to jail & that something bad is coming there way & Devendra must to handle the situation.
Here we all believed at first that Guruva was talking about Shiva. But actually he was talking about Guliga Deva who had known the evil plans of Devendra. Remarkably, this scene was shown just after when Devendra discussed about executing a plan he had in his mind & couldn’t get peace until it is executed. The plan as the movie explained was to get the land by bribing a huge piece of land to Guruva to make him say that the land belongs to Devendra in the next Bhuthakola or kill Guruva & instigate Shiva against Muralidhar to get the land.
Muralidhar’s Eye Injury
When Muralidhar arrested Shiva, he shot the double barreled gun of Shiva in air but instead got injured himself even though Shiva’s gun was functioning totally fine. This was because Muralidhar had shot with Rampa’s gun instead which Shiva had carried with him to meet Leela.
Rampa’s gun could fire both ways (front & back
Rampa’s gun could fire both ways (front & back) simultaneously. The working of this was also shown during the climax fight scene of the movie.
The reference was also set earlier in the movie when Rampa narrated the story of how Raja Gajendra & his grandfather killed a tiger while aiming towards the ground.
Shiva’s Disappearance in the End
Usually the Bhutokola performers belong to the same family & this responsibility is passed on from generations to generations. Hence, Shiva had to do it sooner or later (as his father was also a Bhutokola performer).
Moreover it is not that Panjurli Deva will get into anyone’s body for the Bhutokola ritual. Bhutokola is neither an entertainment nor a staged acting performance. The performer has to withstand rigorous tests and must adhere a life of strict discipline & rules, only then Panjurli Deva gets in the body of the performer upon calling.
In the climax fight Shiva dies in the hands of a goon of Devendra. But then Guliga Deva enters his body to conclude the war with Devendra & his army’s death. Hence, although Shiva gets alive but actually he was dead & was on the mercy of Guliga Deva. This could also be seen in the same climax fight when the same goon tried to kill Shiva again but couldn’t do so because how can one kill a dead man!!
When Shiva & Leela married & Leela got pregnant with Shiva’s baby, Shiva’s role got over as the next Bhuthakola performer would be soon born.
